Dear Parents and Guardians,
I am writing to inform you about an important decision that Grand Rapids Public Schools (GRPS) has made regarding student safety. Effective immediately, we will no longer permit scholars to bring backpacks into school premises. This decision has been made in response to the fourth confiscation of a handgun from a student this academic year.
Regrettably, the most recent incident involved a loaded handgun discovered in the backpack of a third-grade student. It is disheartening to see the issue of guns in the hands of children impacting our elementary school students. In three out of the four incidents we’ve handled, the weapons were located within backpacks.
This decision has not been made lightly, and we fully understand the significant inconvenience it may cause for our families. However, the safety and well-being of our scholars must always be our top priority. As Grand Rapids Public Schools Superintendent, I share in the frustration that such a decision has become necessary. Nonetheless, it is imperative that we take every possible measure to ensure the safety of our children in this rapidly changing world.
The backpack ban policy will remain in effect until further notice. Our district is actively engaged in enhancing security protocols, and rules will be modified as deemed appropriate. This is an ongoing conversation about how we can best protect our children, and we are dedicated to exploring all available avenues to achieve that goal.
I understand that you may have questions or concerns regarding this adjustment. I encourage you to reach out to us at communications@grps.org if you have questions. Our team will ensure that your concerns are addressed by the appropriate school staff.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation in this matter. We appreciate your ongoing support as we work together to maintain a safe and secure learning environment for all our scholars.
Sincerely,
Dr. Leadriane Roby, Ph.D.
Superintendent of Schools
