Reading to Your Child

October 27, 2016

No matter how old children get they still love to be read to. It is a time where they get undivided attention from a parent and feel loved. You can increase the value of these reading sessions by trying these suggestions:

  1. Snuggle when you readMother reading to son (6-7) lying in bed
  2. Read and reread stories requested by children
  3. Be patient when your child is reading aloud
  4. Read with expression and correct phrasing as good modeling for them
  5. Read different kinds of materials including non-fiction, poetry, children’s magazines, etc.
  6. Make predictions about what you think will happen next
  7. Decide what emotions a character must be feeling and why
  8. Look at the pictures and talk about how they were made
  9. Read several books by the same author or same illustrator and find common themes
  10. Take turns. You read one page; your child reads the next, etc.
