Thinking it through

Decision-making involves two important processes:

  1. identifying the impact of your choices on yourself and others,
  2. and using empathy, relationship skills and self- and social awareness to make decisions

Children are far more capable at solving problems than some adults realize, and benefit from making their own decisions when appropriate.

Help your children learn to “problem solve” issues in five steps:

  1. Define the problem
  2. Talk about the feelings
  3. Brainstorm solutions
  4. Evaluate the pros and cons
  5. Pick a solution all agree upon

When necessary, use “logical consequences,” such as no TV time if homework is not complete.
