Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are stressful or traumatic events that occur during childhood, including abuse and neglect as well as household dysfunctions, such as witnessing domestic violence or growing up with family members who have substance use disorders or a mental illness. These adverse experiences have a profound effect on brain development and overall child development.

However, children are resilient. With support from a loving caregiver, they can recover.

This special Parent University course was presented by Arbor Circle’s Dr. Marguerite Morgan LMSW\PhD\CAADC\IMH-E (II).

Dr. Morgan has provided services to young children and their families in Kent County for over 48 years. She serves on many local, state, and national committees and boards that advocate on behalf of families with young children. As an endorsed infant mental health specialist, she promotes the importance of a secure parent-child attachment relationship to lessen the impact of any adverse experiences that may occur during childhood.
